The Icelandic Sagas and their role today

A Nordic Café Lingua will be held in the Nordic House on Thursday 19 March at 17:00-18:30.

Scholars and translators will discuss the 2014 edition of the Icelandic sagas into Danish, Norwegian and Swedish.

Jón Karl Helgason, Professor of Icelandic as a second language at the University of Iceland, will give a lecture on the influence of the sagas on one of Norway's best-known authors, Henrik Ibsen, who was much inspired by the sagas at the beginning of his career.

Three translators who worked on the new editions will tell about their experience. They are: Gro-Tove Sandsmark, exchange lecturer of Norwegian at the University of Iceland, Gísli Magnússon, Lecturer of Danish at the University of Iceland, and Mikael Males, P.hD. in Scandinavian Studies at the University of Oslo.

The lectures will be delivered in the Scandinavian languages.
