Cornerstone of the new building of the Vigdís Finnbogadóttir Institute

On the Icelandic Women's Rights Day, Sunday 19 June 2016 (Icelandic women were among the first in the world to gain the right to vote, on 19 June 1915), Madame Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, President of the Republic of Iceland (1980-1996) and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Languages, and Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector of the University of Iceland, laid the cornerstone of the new building which will house the Vigdís Finnbogadóttir Institute of Foreign Languages and the Vigdís International Centre for Multilingualism and Intercultural Understanding, a UNESCO Category 2 Institute.

On this occasion, the men´s choir Fóstbræður sang a few songs and Professor Auður Hauksdóttir, Director of the Vigdís Finnbogadóttir Institute, addressed the attendees; board members, sponsors, staff and other stakeholders of the Vigdís Finnbogadóttir Institute and the Vigdís International Centre for Multilingualism and Intercultural Understanding.
