Teaching foreign languages in the age of globalization and internet

Foreign language teaching is being reshaped by changes in society brought about by the emergence of new technologies like the internet and by globalization. As a consequence, intercultural communication and awareness have to play a central role in the second language classroom. Non-verbal communication codes and practices have to be taught explicitly to minimize the impact of intercultural misunderstanding and conflict. CLIL, content and language integrated learning, should be given equal importance than the teaching of language form and function.

Moreover, the widespread use of new mobile technologies, social networks and the internet are making it possible for language teachers to provide more personalized instruction that places the student at the centre of the learning process and allows a more inclusive learning environment that can work best for students of any ethnicity, gender identity and ability.

New teaching frameworks, methods and techniques are needed, like flipped learning, cooperative learning, project and challenge based learning and gamification. In this talk, I will give a personal view of all the changes that are taking place in the language classroom because of globalization and the technological revolution of the last decades.

Juan Pablo Mora is an associate professor at the Department of Spanish Language and Linguistics of the University of Sevilla where he teaches General Linguistics to Spanish students and Spanish Linguistics to foreigners. He has been visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, Northwestern University and the University of Chicago. He has been a visiting professor at the University of Iceland (2009-2010) and at the University of Brunei. His most recent research deals with the sociolinguistic situation of Spanish Sign Language, language revitalization, intercultural communication and the teaching of linguistics and of Spanish as a foreign language.
