Focusing on vocabulary in English in the secondary school context
This workshop focuses on vocabulary in lower and upper secondary school and it will focus on key questions for teachers and learners such as: What vocabulary do learners know in English and how can we find out? How much vocabulary do learners need to cope with textbooks and teacher talk in English in academic subjects (such as Maths and Science)? How can teachers plan for this vocabulary? What strategies can learners use to increase their vocabulary size? What vocabulary is important for students in their later years of secondary school if they are planning to go to university? We will draw on Nation’s (2013) framework of planning, strategy training, testing and teaching during this practical workshop, and participants will have plenty of opportunities to ask questions of their own.
Um Averil Coxhead
Averil Coxhead is a vocabulary researcher and experienced English language teacher who teaches in the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. She is the co-author of Academic Vocabulary for Middle School Students: Research-Based Lists and Strategies for Key Content Areas (2015; Brookes). She has researched various aspects of academic vocabulary in secondary school and university contexts, including vocabulary in textbooks, subject-specific vocabulary, teacher talk in an international school, teacher beliefs about specialised vocabulary in schools, vocabulary growth over time and vocabulary size.
