“El sueño de la razón produce monstruos”. La Madre Noche en la literatura moderna

La noche ha sido un tema literario universal. Las antiguas religiones, las mitologías y las primeras civilizaciones asociaron diversos tópicos a la noche que han llegado hasta nosotros. Así, nuestra noche actual es el momento para el terror, la calma o el ocio. En esta charla nos centramos en los orígenes de una literatura nocturna (pre) romántica que aflora en el siglo XVIII en Europa y su influencia en la literatura española e hispanoamericana romántica y simbolista. Analizaremos textos de José Cadalso, Rubén Darío, Francisco Villaespesa y Juan Ramón Jiménez que dan cuenta de dos de las perspectivas mayoritarias en esta literatura: la gótica y la mística.

The night has been a universal literary theme. Ancient religions, mythologies and the first civilizations associated various topics with the night that have come down to us. Thus, our current night is the time for terror, calm or leisure. We focus on the origins of a (pre) Romantic nocturnal literature that emerged in the 18th century in Europe and its influence on Spanish and Latin American Romantic and Symbolist literature. We analyze texts by José Cadalso, Rubén Darío, Francisco Villaespesa and Juan Ramón Jiménez that account for two of the majority perspectives in this literature: the Gothic and the Mystical.
