Publications of the Vigdís Finnbogadóttir Institute of Foreign Languages

The Vigdís Finnbogadóttir Institute has a strong commitment to the publishing of academic works and translations of foreign literatures and also produces an annual journal: Milli mála – Journal of Foreign Languages and Cultures

More than a dozen titles have been published in the institute’s series of dual-language books. They are used by students of language, literature and humanities’ subjects in general, in which they have the opportunity to peruse both the translation and the original work side by side, thus assisting them in understanding both the work and its language. Dual-language publications are also intended for lovers of literature and classic works, who will also have the opportunity to compare the texts in their own and the original language.

The single-language publications of the institute are intended to introduce to Icelandic readers to literature and authors that are little known in this country and thus fill in some of the gaps in the history of translations in Icelandic. The aim is to translate the work from its original language, and that most of these works will have detailed, scholarly introductions.

In Milli mála – the institute’s journal on foreign languages and cultures, there are peer-reviewed articles in the fields of foreign languages, literature, translations, linguistics, and education. Also included are translations, interviews, reviews or introductions to newly published books, depending on the amount of space available within each edition. The journal was published in print during the years 2009–2015, but has become available electronically since 2016.
A special editorial board works on behalf of the institute, and its current members are:

  • Ásdís R. Magnúsdóttir, Professor of French, asdisrm@hi.is
  • Birna Bjarnadóttir, Stephan G. Stephansson Research Specialist, birna@hi.is
  • Kristín Guðrún Jónsdóttir, Professor of Spanish, krjons@hi.is
