Hólmfríður Garðarsdóttir holds a doctoral degree in Latin American literature from the University of Texas in Austin (2001), MA degree from the same university (1996), B.Ed. degree from the University of Iceland (1993) and BA in Spanish from University of Iceland (1988).
Hólmfríður’s main area of research is Latin American contemporary cinema, minority literature of Central America (mainly Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua and Honduras) and contemporary female writers of Latin America.
