Today, the Nowruz festival begins in many countries of the world. The word Nowruz means “new day” and during the festival the renewal of nature and arrival of spring are celebrated with rituals and cultural events.

For more than 3000 years Nowruz has been celebrated in a large area that stretches along the Silk Road from the Balkans across Central Asia all the way to India, promoting values of peace and solidarity. New clothes are worn, friends and relatives are visited, gifts are exchanged and families get together for festive meals.

Nowruz was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009 and in 2010 United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 March International Nowruz Day.
