Focusing on scholarship and research, the Vigdís International Centre operates under the auspices of the Vigdís Finnbogadóttir Institute for Foreign Languages of the University of Iceland’s School of Humanities, see the organisational chart. The Centre’s operations will be based on an agreement between the Icelandic government and the UN Educational and Scientific Organisation UNESCO, and its operating charter. In addition to scientific research, the role of the Vigdís International Centre is to raise consciousness among scholars and laymen alike of the significance of languages for all human culture, and of the importance of translation and knowledge of languages for positive intercultural relations.
Education and qualifications
Doctoral degree in language or linguistics, cultural studies, translation or language technology
Experience of research work and/or supervision of research projects
Experience of management and grant application
Effective organisational and management skills
Initiative and ability to work independently
Service-oriented, positive outlook and personal communication ability.
The managing director handles the Institute’s day-to-day operations in tandem with promotion of its research and development efforts. These include:
Management, operations, fundraising and applications for research grants
Supervision of and responsibility for international research, development and innovation projects
Promotional work and supervision of information and instructional activities under the Centre’s auspices
Other tasks and projects as requested by the Board aimed at expanding and promoting the work of the Centre
The deadline for applications is 15 September 2016. The salary is in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement between the Minister of Finance and respective professional organisation. The intention is to make the appointment as soon as possible.
