    Um mig

    Birna lauk doktorsnámi í almennum málvísindum frá Texas-háskóla í Austin í Bandaríkjunum árið 1990, meistaraprófi frá Háskólanum í Reading í Englandi árið 1977 og BA-prófi frá Háskóla Íslands árið 1975.

    Rannsóknir hennar eru á sviði hagnýtra málvísinda, m.a. máltileinkunar, íslensku sem annars máls, fjarkennslu tungumála og ensku sem samskiptamáls. Birna hefur verið verkefnisstjóri Icelandic Online frá upphafi og stýrt þróun The English Game. Síðastliðin fimm ár hefur hún, í samvinnu við Hafdísi Ingvarsdóttur prófessor, unnið að rannsókn á stöðu ensku á Íslandi sem styrkt er af Rannsóknamiðstöð Íslands og Rannsóknasjóði Háskóla Íslands.
